Research data in the humanities needs to be sustainable, and access to digital resources must be possible over a long period. Only if these prerequisites are fulfilled can research data be used as a source for new projects. Reliability is another fundamental requirement so that digital sources can be cited, reused, and quoted. The Data and Service Center for the Humanities, located in Switzerland, aims to help solve this problem. It offers a centralized infrastructure based on flexible and extensible software, modern technologies, and open standards. This makes it straightforward to migrate existing humanities research project databases with limited life spans to a standards-based form for long-term preservation and reuse. We will demonstrate the basic concepts behind this proposed solution and our initial results.

The Non-Film Department at the Swiss Film Archive (Cinémathèque suisse) comprises one of the world's most significant iconographic collections related to cinema. In 2020, the department initiated a shift towards digital technologies for the study and digital curation of the collections. The first steps aim at digitizing analog documents and preserving born-digital objects.

Consequently, the department is addressing three main topics:

  • the use of artificial intelligence for the study of the collections (HTR, facial recognition...)
  • the digitisation of the film-related collection
  • the long-term preservation of the data using OAIS

The department is collaborating with the Digital Humanities Lab at the University of Basel for a 3D digitisation pilot seminar. It comprises the :

  • 3D digitization of stop-motion animated puppets
  • 3D digitization of movie cameras, projectors...
  • 3D digitization of highly reflective surfaces of movie cameras

The Digital Humanities Laboratory was founded by Professor Frédéric Kaplanin 2012. It develops new computational approaches for rediscovering the past and anticipating the future. The projects conducted at the lab range from the reconstruction of ancient cities to the algorithms influence in writing. The Venice Time Machine is the DHLAB flagship project, in partnership with Ca’ Foscari University. It aspires to digitize 1000 years of historical records and make them accessible. The DHLAB trains a new generation of digital humanists, developing innovative educational programs as well as didactic technologies.

The Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI) is committed to a unified, low-threshold and long-term access to discipline-specific reference data crucial to art historical research in Switzerland. It includes the translation and provision of relevant thesauri, such as the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) in three national languages, as well as their implemention in research environments and collection management systems.

The "Data Life-Cycle Management" (DLCM), was launched to catch up with the new directives in research data management required by funding agencies and publishers. The DLCM project involves eight partners institutions. It was initiated on September 1st, 2015 following a two-year period of maturation. Given that each partner institution has already major issues in data management to resolve, the involved national funding program provided us with the just-in-time opportunity to gather our respective forces and to grapple with this important and complex topic so as to serve the whole Swiss research community.

The "National Infrastructure for Editions – Infrastructure Nationale pour les Éditions" (NIE - INE) is a project funded by the Swissuniversities' program "Scientific information: access, processing and safeguarding" that has been submitted by the FEE Forum für Edition und Erschliessung. The University of Basel and its partners in Berne, Geneva and Zurich, together with the University Library of Basel and the Central Library of Zurich, receive 2.36 million Swiss francs of more than 5.26 million Swiss francs of total budget.

Innovative software solutions from Basel.

We develop and sell imaging and visualisation software that digitally recreates the visual impression of any material. We provide services and customised solutions to transfer the authentic appearance of real objects and materials to the digital domain. We bring together know-how from physics, scientific and computational photography, optics, computer graphics and color-science. We are a proud spin-off from Digital Humanities Lab (formerly Imaging and Media Lab), University of Basel.

The Institute of Computational Linguistics conducts research and teaching in the fields of Computational Linguistics, Language Technology and Phonetics. It offers courses of study and/or courses and seminars in all fields. The research focuses on systems for multilingual text analysis. These include statistical machine translation, text mining, sentiment analysis, systems for building and searching parallel tree banks and parallel concordances, and digital humanities with a focus on digitizing and annotating multilingual corpora.

Huma-Num is a very large research infrastructure designed to facilitate the digital shift in research in the humanities and social sciences. At the heart of SHS and digital humanities, it is built on an original organization consisting in implementing a human (collective consultation) and technological (sustainable digital services) mechanism at national and European level, based on an extensive network of partners and operators.

The International Book Society (IBG) has been an interdisciplinary discussion forum for all those interested in the medium of the book, its historical development and current function since 1999.

The Society's Mandate

The aim of the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature (Internationale Gesellschaft für Empirische Literaturwissenschaft; IGEL) is to advance empirical literary research through interdisciplinary and international cooperation. The Society supports efforts to apply, or facilitate the application of, scientific methods to study of the structure and function of literature, especially its aesthetic function. Literature is broadly defined as all cultural artifacts that embody literary devices, such as narrative genre, stylistic variations, and figurative language. The domain includes novels, short stories, and poetry, but also theater, film, television, and digital media.

Göttingen State and University Library, founded in 1734, was the first realisation of the idea of a modern research library. As early as the 18th century, the library began developing holdings of national and international importance, which were continuously maintained throughout its history. Based on these efforts, the library has taken on a variety of tasks at the local, regional, national, and international level.
