55238-01 - Seminar: How to Utilize Eye-Tracking in Literary Reading Research
The first day program will involve several introductory seminars on eye tracking and empirical literary studies, plus a hands-on session will be organized in which students can get acquainted with eye-tracking methodology.
The second day will involve several lectures of pilot projects related to the main problem at the core of the workshop (how can we link specific text features to specific eye movements during reading?), followed by round table conversations in which not just the speakers, but the PhD students will be asked to participate.
This workshop will be a platform for specialists from linguistics and empirical literary studies to come together and try to tackle a specific research problem that they would not be able to solve on their own. For example, if we want to know what gets readers absorbed or immersed in a text, we need to be able to measure such a feeling online while they are reading. The problem is that once we have a battery of psychophysiological points of measurements, how do we relate this back to the text in a meaningful way? We need to be able to link a specific eye movement pattern that we are interested in to the occurrence of certain text features and for that we need to combine strengths.
