Welcome to the Master's Program in Digital Humanities at the University of Basel!

Congratulations on your enrolment on the Master's programme in Digital Humanities at the University of Basel. We are delighted to welcome you to our Master's programme. To make it easier for you to start your studies, we have compiled some important information below.

For a successful start to your studies, we have already provided some basic information on our website as well as an introductory video (at the bottom of the page). These materials offer you valuable insights into the content and requirements of the degree programme: Introduction to the DH Master's degree.

The study plan for the Master's degree programme in Digital Humanities is available here (German only). It provides an overview of the various modules that can be taken during your degree programme and the credit points to be earned for them. Please note that these are the minimum requirements; additional courses can broaden and deepen your knowledge. There is no fixed order in which the courses must or should be taken - unless this is noted in the courses themselves.

You can find the current courses in the course directory. There you can simply navigate via the structure ‘Phil.-Hist. > Master > Digital Humanities’ to view the modules and the courses offered. Please note that the range of courses on offer changes every semester. Accordingly, there are no compulsory courses, but the modules must be taken and passed with the courses type provided for in the study plan.

Enrolment for courses takes place via the system of the University of Basel.

As part of your Master's degree programme, you must complete a seminar paper and a Master's examination. If you choose Digital Humanities as your major, the Master's thesis must also be written in this subject. Further information and guidelines on this work and the examination can be found here.

An obligatory part of the Master's programme is the internship, which comprises at least 150 working hours. Detailed information on registering for and completing the internship can be found at the following link: Internship in the DH Master's programme. Please submit the completed internship application form at least four weeks before the start of the internship. If you need assistance in finding an internship, please contact the Career Service Centre of the University of Basel. For approval and further questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Peter Fornaro.

If you would like to transfer credits from outside the university or complete a semester at another university, you can find the process here (in German). It is always advisable to discuss this with the DH academic advisor at an early stage.

In the first week of the autumn semester, we cordially invite you to our Welcome(back)@DH event. This event is an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know the other students, staff, lecturers and alumni of Digital Humanities in Basel. It offers you the opportunity to make valuable contacts, exchange views on current developments in the department and become part of our growing DH community. We would be delighted if you took part and later joined us as alumni to build a lively and networked community that will accompany you during and after your studies. Each spring, the student association (Fachgruppe) also organizes an event for students. Invitations are sent via email to all enrolled students.

We attach great importance to the active participation of our students. The student association of Digital Humanities (Fachgruppe / FG) offers you the opportunity to play an active role in the life and further development of our degree programme. The FG promotes the exchange between students, professors, lecturers and staff of the DH Lab and represents your interests to the DH Lab, the Faculty of Humanities and the University of Basel. If you are interested in getting involved in the specialist group - be it on the teaching committee, in the organisation of events or in other areas - the FG would be delighted to hear from you. You can find more information on the website or contact the FG directly at fg-dh@clutterunibas.ch.

If you would like access to the FG’s DH community on WhatsApp, feel free to contact the Fachgruppe directly. You can use this platform to receive information from the FG. You will also find subgroups for job offers in the field of digital humanities for internships or after graduation, for board games or for memes. You can register for the various groups according to your interests. This platform replaces the FG's e-mail distribution list and allows you to join the specific areas that are relevant to you.

If you have any questions about study planning, credit transfer or other concerns, you can book consultation hours conveniently via the PhilApp of the Faculty of Humanities. Alternatively, you can also send us your questions directly by e-mail to - we will be happy to help you.

The Digital Humanities Lab is an interdisciplinary institution of the University of Basel dedicated to the coordination and promotion of research, teaching and infrastructure in the field of digitalisation in the humanities and social sciences. We offer both a Master's programme and a doctorate in Digital Humanities. The DH Lab is located at Spalenberg 65. All students have access to the 2nd and 4th floor of the building with their Unicard - to activate access, you must regularly update the Unicard on one of the black devices, one of which is located on the ground floor of Spalenberg 65. Although the Lab itself does not provide study rooms, there are numerous well-equipped study rooms available at the University of Basel, which you can find here.

We look forward to meeting you in person soon and wish you a successful start to your Master's programme.

Best regards,

 DH Lab Teaching Team

Irène Kälin (DH-Coordinator) & Christian Weber (Head of Teaching a.i.)
